John Fitch born in 1743 died in 1798 at Bardstown, Kentucky. Gunmaker fro Province of New Jersey during the Revolution. Manufactured files at Trenton with steelmaker Stacy Potts. Gunsmith or armorer to Committee of Safety, contracted to repair arms and make metal buttons for the Army. His shop burned by the British in 1776, Fitch moved to Bucks Co., Pa. Inventor of first steamboat, which operated between Trenton and Philadelphia 1788-1790. |
